How to fire a client professionally
A client is costing you more than they pay you — in hours, in weekend messages, or in dread. You've been meaning to end it since March.
The email
Subject: Wrapping up our work together Hi [NAME], I'm going to finish [PROJECT] and then step back from the account. [LASTDAY] will be my last day on it. Between now and then I'll [HANDOVER], so nothing lands on you half-finished. The final invoice covers work through [LASTDAY] and nothing after it. It's been good working with you. This is about how I'm structuring my next year, not about you. [YOU]
Why it works
A named last day converts an intention into a fact, and it is the one sentence that must survive every edit. The handover paragraph is what protects your reputation — people forgive being left, not being left mid-sentence. And attributing the decision to how you're structuring your year gives them nothing to argue with and nothing to repeat.
What most people send instead
A grievance letter listing everything they did wrong. It feels earned and it is the single most expensive paragraph you will ever write: they have a network, and now they have a story.
